. . .these are the mere edges of His ways

He stretches out the north over empty space;
He hangs the earth on nothing.
He binds up the water in His thick clouds,
Yet the clouds are not broken under it.
He covers the face of His throne,
And spreads His cloud over it.
He drew a circular horizon on the face of the waters,
At the boundary of light and darkness.
 The pillars of heaven tremble,
And are astonished at His rebuke.
He stirs up the sea with His power,
And by His understanding He breaks up the storm.
 By His Spirit He adorned the heavens;
His hand pierced the fleeing serpent.
Indeed these are the mere edges of His ways,
And how small a whisper we hear of Him!
But the thunder of His power who can understand?”
Job 26:7-14

the mere edges.
Just scratching the surface.
The tip of the iceberg.
A shadow of things to come.

That's what Job means.
The mere edges of His ways means we're just scratching the surface of the knowledge of God.

But even the mere edges are enough to inspire faith.

  • they are sufficient to give hope.
  • they are capable of offering comfort.
  • they are suitable to provide guidance.
  • they are able to gift peace.
  • they are expert at disciple-making.
  • they are seasoned counselors in trials.
  • they are reliable in campaigns against the enemy.
  • they are indispensable for training in righteousness.
  • they are equal to every challenge of life.
  • they are infallible.
  • they are eternal.
  • they are His choice of self-revelation.
  • they should lead us to thirst for more of God.

I've been reading Amy Carmichael's devotional, The Edges of His Ways.
Her writing urges me to be in awe of God and to renew my dependence upon Him for everything in my life.

Whatever you might be struggling with, God is able and willing to help.
Will it all turn out as you wish?
Sometimes yes, but more often God is working something out that eludes us.
We can't see all of His plan, but we can rely on the mere edges of His ways.

When you're in the middle and you don't know the end you have have to hang on to what you do know.

  • He loves you with an everlasting love. Jeremiah 31:3
  • He demonstrated that love in sending His Son to purchase pardon for your sins.  Romans 5:8
  • He works it all out for good.  Romans 8:28
  • You have been given everything you need for life and godliness--- through the knowledge of Him.  2 Peter 1:3
And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.
Jeremiah 29:13

Even the mere edges are enough for us.

He's bigger than you think
more loving than you know
kind above all measure
to anger He is slow

His mercies never fail
His faithfulness is great
yet in the dark unknowing
we best can learn to wait

So hold on to the edges
of all you've learned is true
pushing back the fear the doubt
In His time He'll rescue you

I'm curious about the edges you've discovered.
What has God shown you that inspires you in your journey of faith?
How has it been enough for the challenges of life that have come your way?

  1. When I hold onto the edges and reach for more, He is always there. I am His child and He WANTS me to hold onto HIm - as much as I am willing and/or able. His response to me turning to Him is what holds and sustains me and encourages me for another day. He reveals His will and helps me make decisions.

Thank you for sharing and the poem is excellent! xoxo

    1. I think God wants us to be able to trust Him while He works in us and around us. The more I cling to Him in child-like trust the more I feel His sure grip on me. I know you experience this too. You're in my prayers and I hope I'm in yours as well. Call me.

What God Can Do with Our Life Messes

High School Memories He has  made everything beautiful in its time.     Also, he has put eternity into man's heart, yet so that he cannot  find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.    Ecclesiastes 3:11 I happened to see this photo this morning on a friend's Facebook timeline.   That's me on the far right cheering on the JV football team. I made a mess of my life early on. Looking back at that photo and others from a yearbook I see so many missed opportunities. But, looking at my life now I see what God has done with the mess I made. I see how He was present in guiding and directing my path to Him. His light shining down into my darkness illuminating the way. The girl next to me once invited me to a youth camp.   Two days before the camp my cousins arrived for a visit and my Mom said I couldn't go. Would I have met God then and changed the course of my life? Well, we don't know the answers to questions...

30,000 PROMISES

There are said to be thirty thousand promises made  to the child of God, but they are of no more value  to  us than statements in the newspaper if we  do  not  personally appropriate them. J. Oswald Sanders, Spiritual Maturity PROMISE #1 I came across this sentence about two weeks ago and it has resurfaced in my thoughts again and again.  Yesterday I calculated that if I found 4.5 promises every single day I could find all 30,000 if I lived to be 80 years old.   How many promises support our lives every single day?  I don't know the number, but wouldn't be surprised if it were in the hundreds. Promises that reveal God's: PERSON PLAN PRESENCE POWER PROVISION PURPOSES PROTECTION PATIENCE There are literally thousands of promises that reveal His NATURE, LOVE, GRACE, MERCY, and FORGIVENESS. We, His children by faith, are supported and graced by the promises God has given us. Every day I want to fin...

You Know You're in Africa When. . .

You know you're in Africa when color is everywhere  and small children are carried in a sling on Mom's  back.  This cloth, used all over Africa,  is the original "hands free" device .    You know you're in Africa when the mother and baby goat are part of the checked luggage that rides on top of the bus.  Gary says he has never seen them held in with ropes , it may be a new traffic regulation.      You know you're in Africa when the local Record store is called Beautiful Jesus Music.  You know you're in Africa when the oncoming traffic has horns and knows how to use them.   You know you're in Africa when the goats eat the park bench. You know you're in Africa when  the ants make a hill taller than your car. And finally, you know you're in Africa when the clouds look like they've been created in Photo Shop. But they weren't...
